DIY 101 How to Unclog a Bathroom Sink

Without expecting it, a bathroom sink can get clogged which sends back dirty water to the basin and prevent you from finishing your daily repertoire.

Luckily, this sort of issue can easily be fixed without enlisting a plumber or cleaning professional’s help. Below we show you just how to do that.

1) Boiling Water

If your bathroom sink isn’t totally blocked but drains slowly, boiling water may be all you need to solve the problem.

For this, get a basin and fill it with hot water or a kettle with water then heat it. Send the boiling water to the drain three or four times to allow the blockage to soften and go through.

2) Baking Soda & Vinegar

Baking Soda & Vinegar

Baking soda & vinegar are the undisputed cleaning agents at home. They can take out hard stains, grease, rust, soap scums, hair, and hard water deposits.

That should suggest that they are potent enough to dissolve the buildup in your bathroom sink’s drain.

Simply mix 1/3 cup of baking soda and 1/3 cup of vinegar. You’ll see them reacting to each other right after mixing them, pour the water down the drain, and then let it sit for an hour.

Later, come back and flush hot water down the drain for a clear and free-flowing drain. Hopefully, this should do the trick.

3) Baking Soda & Salt

Don’t have much vinegar left? No problemo, you can just put together a half cup of baking soda and a half cup of salt to unstop your bathroom sink.

Give it fifteen minutes to dilute with the baking soda. Afterward, promptly pour the mixture toward the drain.

For extra unblocking power, you could also pour hot water into the drain. These three ingredients create a powerful reaction that can clear the toughest obstruction in its way.

And at the same time, it leaves your drain clean, and thus, the whole bathroom clean too!

4) Wet and Dry Vacuum

Another easy way to get rid of the stubborn blockage in your sink is using a wet and dry vacuum such as a Shop-Vac.

First, you should take out the drain cover of your bathroom sink, open the tap for the water to back up a few inches, put a rag over it, and vacuum away.

The purpose of the rag is to maximize the suction potential of the vacuum. Without placing it into the water, it may not be able to suck out the water entirely which will dislodge the stuck particles in the drain.

5) Sink Auger

Sink Auger

A sink auger can deal with the toughest blockages of them all and is used by professional plumbers. If the methods above did not unblock the drain, then we suggest using a sink auger.

It is a pole object with a coiled spiral and hook. To use it, you have to remove the sink drain cover first and reach down carefully toward the buildup or debris, rotate the handle like a fisherman’s rod, and slowly pull up the culprit item.

Bear in mind that you shouldn’t push down the auger roughly so you won’t unintentionally push the obstruction deeper into the drain.
